5 Keys to Creating Ultimate Marketing Success

Creating success is never a given. It takes hard work, vision and the determination to persevere even when things get tough. While there is not an exact roadmap to success in your business or marketing, there are a few keys that are essential to your success.

What is success? I love the way Derek Sivers defined it on the Tim Ferris show. When asked who he thought the most successful person in the word was he gave an outstanding answer.

"In that case: first would be Richard Branson, because that’s like the stereotype - the Mona Lisa. And honestly, you might be my 2nd answer, but we can talk about that later.

My third and real answer is we can’t know, without knowing their aims.

What if Richard Branson set out to live a quiet life, but like a compulsive gambler, just can’t stop creating companies? Then that changes everything, and we can’t call him successful anymore."

Hey, what's up, everybody? Welcome to Hack My Growth. I am recording this episode from an event that I'm attending. It's such a powerful event. I wanted to share some of what I'm learning with you guys and how it applies to what we're doing every day in our marketing and growing our business. All right. Let's go.

As a business owner myself, one of the things that I want to make sure of is that my business is successful. And success is not just financial, but success is having a business that I run that doesn't run me. A business that I enjoy being in and helping other people, providing value to other people.

I'm sure that you feel similar to me in a lot of those ways. Now, what are the keys to creating success in our business? The way we go about it may be different, but the foundations for success are similar across the board.

The first key is you need to know what you're going after. You need to know your outcome. You need to have clarity about what your end result is. I think a lot of times we miss this step. We just make a broad statement about what we want, but we don't get very specific and clear about what we want. 

When you're starting a marketing campaign, (ask yourself) what's the goal of that campaign? What do you want that campaign to accomplish? What are the outcomes of that campaign? Making sure that you write those down and taking the time to flush those (questions) out is going to make a huge difference.

The second key that you need to know is you need to know why you want those. It's not enough just to know what you want; you want to know why you want what you want. It's the what and the why connected that make a huge impact.

A lot of time we focus only on why but we're not very clear about what it is we want. Or sometimes we focus on what we want, but we don't have a strong enough why, so we give up as we continue to flush this thing out.

(Third key) After you do that, you have to take action. You have to put these things into practice. You have to start doing the work. If you don't do the work, you're not going to get the outcome. So many times we think that just because we post a few things on Twitter, Facebook, some other social media or maybe try SEO for a month and it doesn't work that these tactics aren't for us. But the reality is we have to take massive action, a focused action that's going to get us what our end goal is.

The fourth key is we need to know what we're getting. We need to make sure that we measure our results. You can only manage what you measure. If you do not measure it, you're not managing it. It's managing you, and you're not going to know if it's working or not.

We talk a lot about the power of measurement in our videos and on our blog and this is why BI is important, but even further than that, it's just understanding what these metrics are.

And the last key is if it's not working, change your approach. Don't quit, but change your approach. What are you doing? What has worked? What isn't working? This is why we need to measure (goals), so we can understand those things. And then we keep changing until we get the results that we are looking for.

This is a powerful formula to make sure that you do have success in the things you’re working on. And this can work in our life too. And it works very well for business and marketing. This is a type of strategy that we put into our marketing formula to make sure that we get the results that we want.
