SEO and GEO Competitive Research Using n8n and SE Ranking

There’s a lot of talk right now about automating SEO workflows and building out AI agents, and it can get overwhelming fast, even for people who like playing around with this stuff. Not every tool is built to do everything we think it should do.

How Can You Automate SEO and GEO Competitive Research?

You can automate SEO and GEO competitive research by connecting n8n to SE Ranking, which pulls your AI search visibility, organic keyword gaps, questions, and competitor citation data into one Google Sheet automatically. This replaces manual report downloads and copy-pasting with a workflow that runs in minutes.

This approach works best for marketers and agencies who need to regularly check competitive standing without rebuilding the research process every time.

Agents vs. Automation: When To Use Each

Before getting into the workflow itself, we need to talk about when to use automation versus when to use agents. Not every tool is built to do everything we think it should, so having a framework matters.

When to Use Automation (n8n)

n8n is built for automation. Use it when you already know the exact steps in advance and the process is sequential. The logic is deterministic: if Y, then do Z. If X, then do Y.

Automation works best when:

  • You have structured information moving between systems
  • You’re working on a reliable schedule (daily, weekly, monthly)
  • You want full visibility into every step that runs

Automation is more hands-on to build. It’s sequential, and you orchestrate it from end to end.

When to Use Agents (LLMs + MCPs)

Agents come in when you need help with reasoning. This means using a large language model alongside tool sets such as MCPs.

Agent-based work is typically:

  • Pulling from unstructured data sources like emails, PDFs, or documents
  • Using different tools ad hoc depending on the angle you need
  • Hard to map out completely in advance
  • Conversational and iterative, where you’re working back and forth and reprompting

The Use Case: SEO Competitive Research

Most SEO reporting tasks can be automated. This applies especially when you’re early in a project or need to pull specific data sources for new research. That’s exactly what this workflow does.

How the Workflow Works

The setup uses an n8n template with the SE Ranking community node. You install it, add your API credentials, connect Google Sheets, paste in your URLs, and activate the workflow.

It’s simple enough that anybody can launch it. The inputs are just your domain, your competitors, and a seed topic.

What You Get: 5 Data Sets in One Sheet

Once the workflow runs, you get five tabs in one Google Sheet:

  1. AI Search Leaderboard – share of voice across ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, AI Overviews, and more
  2. Organic Keyword Gaps – where competitors outrank you, sorted by volume
  3. Questions / Informational Queries – tied to your seed topic, showing what you need to cover
  4. Current AI Search Prompts – where you’re already appearing in LLM results
  5. Competitor Citation Gaps – where competitors are being cited or mentioned, and you aren’t

This data feeds directly into LLM tools, so you can reason through it and build a strategy to close the gaps.

Setting Up the Workflow

The template is called “Track AI Search Winners and Uncover Topic Gaps with SE Ranking and Google Sheets.” You need an n8n account and an SE Ranking account with API access.

Click “Use for Free” and import the template into your own workspace. From there, you’ll see a Setup section with a domain input form already built out. Connect your SE Ranking API (the workflow walks you through adding credentials if you don’t have them), then connect a Google Sheet via Google OAuth. Once everything is connected, you’re ready to run it.

Running the Workflow

After filling out the form with your domain, competitors, and seed topic, the workflow runs through several steps automatically:

  • Runs the AI leaderboard analysis and sends it to the sheet
  • Runs the gap analysis and sends it to the sheet
  • Runs the question analysis and sends it to the sheet
  • Runs the AI topic analysis and sends it to the sheet

You could pull all of this data manually if you wanted to copy-paste and download a bunch of documents. But this process is deterministic, which means it can be automated. That saves time and energy so you can focus on the work that actually needs your input.

Breaking Down the Google Sheet Tabs

Tab 1: AI Leaderboard. Every run adds a row with rank, timestamp, share of voice, brand presence, link presence, and performance across AI engines, plus some organic data.

Tab 2: Organic Gaps. Shows which competitor ranks highest against you for specific terms, where you currently rank, and where the gaps are so you can close them.

Tab 3: Questions. Shows questions related to your seed topic along with SERP features and intent. SEO still matters here, since you need dual optimization for both traditional search and AI search.

Tab 4: AI Topics. Shows where you’re currently ranking, what snippets and links are showing, and what pages are being cited versus what’s not.

Tab 5: Competitor AI Prompts. Shows the prompts your competitors are showing up for so you can reverse-engineer what you need to target to get cited too.

All of this data comes from filling out one form and hitting go. It takes minutes instead of the downloading, copy-pasting, and VLOOKUPs we’ve all done for years.

Getting Started With n8n Workflows

Think of n8n as the skeleton. It takes deterministic logic, pulls the data, and formats it so you can actually use it. You can even add Claude to specific n8n layers to prioritize and reformat data before it reaches your Google Sheet.

Or connect them directly. n8n has its own MCP, so you can run workflows through it from Claude, pull that data into your conversation, and layer it with prompts or a Claude Project to interpret the information and turn it into action.

Automation and agents work well together as long as each does what it’s best at. Automation pulls and formats the data deterministically. That makes the agent’s job easier because it doesn’t have to parse through a bunch of superfluous information first.
