Page Experience and Ranking

In our previous video, we explored user engagement and its impact on search rankings. Today, we’re shifting gears to explore another crucial factor: page experience.

Google prioritizes websites that offer a smooth, fast-loading, and secure experience for users. In today’s video, we discuss the key elements of page experience and provide actionable SEO strategies to optimize your website. With these recommendations, you’ll deliver a top-notch experience for visitors, ultimately boosting your search ranking and user engagement.

Page Experience: Key Findings

Page experience is a major factor in search ranking and is interwoven with other SEO aspects. Studies show that users are more likely to engage with websites that load quickly, provide a smooth interaction experience, and prioritize user safety.

Core Web Vitals (CWVs)

Core Web Vitals (LCP, FID, CLS) are a set of metrics that Google uses to measure how fast and stable your website content loads for users.

  • LCP (Largest Contentful Paint) – Tells you how fast the main content (text or image) loads on your website.
  • FID (First Input Delay) – Measures how responsive your website feels after loading, focusing on user interaction speed.
  • CLS (Cumulative Layout Shift) – Tracks how much your website layout jumps around during loading, impacting visual stability.

Optimizing for good CWV scores is essential for providing a positive user experience and improving your search ranking. This includes techniques like compressing images, improving server response time, and lazy loading images to ensure a fast loading experience (LCP).

Additionally, minimizing JavaScript and breaking up long tasks can help improve how quickly users can interact with your website (FID).

Finally, reserving space for elements and ensuring consistent CSS throughout your pages helps prevent unexpected layout shifts (CLS) that can frustrate users.

Mobile Usability

Even for businesses that aren’t primarily mobile-focused, having a website that is optimized for mobile devices is crucial for SEO success in 2024. Google prioritizes mobile-first indexing, so ensuring your website has a responsive design, optimized touch interactions, and fast loading times on mobile devices is essential for providing a good user experience and achieving good search rankings.

Security and Safe Browsing Signs

Security is a major factor in search ranking, especially for websites that handle transactions or require users to submit sensitive information. Google prioritizes user safety and will penalize websites that are not secure. This means implementing and maintaining high security standards, such as having a valid HTTPS certificate and ensuring all content served on secure pages is itself secure.

SEO Strategy Recommendations

1. Core Web Vitals

As discussed previously, optimizing for Core Web Vitals (LCP, FID, CLS) is essential for a good user experience and SEO performance. Utilize the following techniques to achieve good CWV scores:

  • Image compression
  • Improved server response time
  • Lazy loading
  • Minimized Javascript
  • Consistent CSS

2. Mobile Usability and Security

Maintain focus on optimizing your website for mobile users. This includes ensuring a responsive design that adjusts to different screen sizes, having touch-friendly interactions, and achieving fast loading times on mobile devices.

Implement and consistently maintain high security standards on your website. This includes having a valid HTTPS certificate and ensuring all content served on secure pages is itself secure.

3. Continuous Monitoring and Adaptation

Monitor your website’s performance regularly using tools like Google Search Console and PageSpeed Insights. Analyze the data you collect to identify areas for improvement and iterate on your website to continually enhance the user experience. Stay updated with Google’s algorithm changes and best practices for SEO by following resources like the Google Search Central blog and Search Liaison tweets.
