In this episode of The Growth Nexus Podcast, host Ryan Shelley welcomes Anthony Armendariz, CEO of Funsize, a digital product and brand design agency based in Austin, Texas. Anthony draws on over a decade of experience in design and business leadership, and he offers an honest take on what it means to lead with purpose.
The Role of AI in Creativity and Design
Anthony explains that while Funsize is exploring AI, they take a cautious and intentional approach. Instead of viewing AI as a shortcut or cost-saving tool, they see it as a way to support creativity, especially in early-stage divergent thinking. For instance, they’re experimenting with models trained on individual designers’ styles to maintain creative consistency even when a designer isn’t on a project.
Still, Anthony is skeptical about widespread AI dependency and doesn’t see it as a way to create faster, cheaper projects, but as a way to offer additional value. AI is a creative partner and never replaces human connection.
Ryan points out the limitations of large language models and their inability to make ethical or emotionally resonant decisions. Both agree that the long-term human impacts of AI, including the potential erosion of craft skills, should not be ignored.
Designing Through Relationships, Not Transactions
Human connection is important in client relationships. Anthony shares that people keep Funsize thriving more than beautiful design.
Funsize focuses on championing the personal and professional goals of its clients. Whether helping a stakeholder achieve a promotion or guiding a startup founder through the early stages of ideation, the goal is always to serve the whole person.
Ryan shares stories from his own agency, where long-term client partnerships have driven more success than cold lead generation ever could.
The Resurgence of Branding and Storytelling
UX and UI design are increasingly commoditized, and Anthony sees a renewed appreciation for branding as a strategic differentiator. From founder stories to product details like the way a button animates, small touches create lasting connections.
Ryan adds that brand identity is everything, even in SEO and technical marketing. People don’t just choose products. They choose brands they trust. This trust is built through story and consistency and drives long-term loyalty.
Storytelling is a fundamental human need. People connect through stories through podcasts, design, or even by telling their kids about childhood memories.
Finding Joy and Freedom in the Work
Anthony has transitioned from hands-on design to focus on storytelling and content creation. Ryan has also seen his agency pivot from video production in their early days to SEO and content marketing. Curiosity and purpose guided these shifts.
Business owners often forget they are free to say no, change direction, or even shut down entirely if the joy is gone. You can run your business forever the way you want, or decide just to turn it off. It’s a refreshing reminder that fulfillment is a worthy goal.
