In this episode of the Growth Nexus podcast, host Ryan Shelley sits down with serial entrepreneur Tom Kieley to discuss the critical elements of building successful businesses.
Tom, who has launched two thriving startups and co-authored Start-Up Lessons Learned Along the Way: Our SourceDay Journey, shares his insights on the importance of culture, community, and strategic focus. He details his journey from overbuilding products to adopting an MVP approach, emphasizing the necessity of listening to customers while maintaining a clear differentiator.
Tom also talks about balancing technological advancements, such as AI, with a human-centric business model, highlighting the significance of fostering a transparent and innovative company culture.
This episode offers valuable lessons for entrepreneurs and business owners seeking to navigate growth while staying true to their core values and market focus.
Learning From Early Mistakes and Adopting an MVP Approach
Tom recounts his experience with his first startup, RightGift, where he overbuilt the product and spent excessive resources before validating customer needs. This led to a critical lesson: the importance of launching a minimal viable product (MVP) to gather real-time feedback and iterate effectively.
When he co-founded SourceDay, he applied this lesson, focusing on a core offering—real-time visibility of supplier delivery—and gradually expanding based on customer feedback and market validation. This strategic shift allowed SourceDay to become a leader in its category, demonstrating the power of focused development and customer-centric innovation.
Maintaining a Clear Differentiator and Avoiding Scope Creep
Tom emphasizes the challenge of staying focused in a rapidly evolving market, especially with the allure of emerging technologies like AI. He discusses how SourceDay initially explored various synergistic products but ultimately recognized that their core differentiator—inbound supply visibility—was their strongest asset.
To avoid diluting their product, they learned to say “no” to features that didn’t align with their core mission, even if customers requested those features. This discipline enabled them to maintain a competitive edge and build a robust, specialized platform. He also mentioned that directly surveying customers in person was a key part of their strategy, allowing them to gauge real excitement.
Building a Strong Company Culture and Valuing Team Input
Culture was paramount to Tom from the beginning. He and his co-founder intentionally built a culture of transparency, innovation, and celebration. They encouraged employees to challenge ideas and take risks, fostering an environment where everyone felt valued and empowered.
Tom shares examples of how his team’s input helped refine their product strategy and prevent them from repeating past mistakes. He highlights the importance of celebrating both big and small wins, reinforcing a positive and motivating workplace. He also emphasizes the value of hiring people who are smarter than you and have different skill sets.
